Umbra (meaning 'shadow' or 'shade') is a short stop-motion animation about the subtextual secrets that lie hidden in our every day language and context. Based on the original Grimm's fairytales, each frame was hand cut and carefully paired with pages from the 1971 book 'Woman in Sexist Society: A Study in Power and Powerlessness' by Vivian Gornick. The scenes portray stereotypical displays of the oppression of women, whose actions lead to absurdly grotesque punishments — drawing dark yet, comical parallels to the history of feminism.
